Shelves stained, wallpaper trim added

Hello my friends!

Yesterday I went over to a friend's house and we both worked on two separate miniature projects. She made an adorable mini trunk with matt board, and I worked on my kitchen shadow box.

I contemplated painting the sink and the other shelf that were part of the original scene white, but then I realized that pieces of furniture in a kitchen roombox at the beginning of the 20th century would likely be unpainted wood.

So I decided to stain the shelves and add some wallpaper trim to the shelves for aesthetic appeal.

Here is the picture showing the updates to my project.

The shelf with the dishes on it will be mounted on the wall. The butter churn will be painted white or stained. I'm still planning to add scenic water and an old wash rag to go into the white pail. I'm going to take everything out of the box, scrub off any accumulated dirt, and remove the existing wallpaper.

Then I will paint the whole shadowbox white, and probably add the some of the blue wallpaper I have used to line the shelves as a border along the back wall.

There are a couple other things I am considering adding to the scene. Jars of Jam, vintage groceries, an old calendar and clock glued to the wall.

I'm having lots of fun with this one!

    1. Aww, thanks Linda! I'm revamping it to sell at our city's Miniature Show and Sale in September. I like it so much, I might have to make another one just for me :)
Eventually I'll be selling shadowboxes in my Etsy Shop, with a plexiglass front and a hook so you can hang them on your wall.

  4. Very nice details. It's funny how many items are used to fill one shadow box. I love the shelves as well as all the furniture pieces. Great job!

  6. Thanks Jane <3. For the stain I used two "touch up your furniture" wood stain pens from the dollar store. They come in three shades, I experimented and discovered the medium stain and the dark stain layered on top looked the best.
    I love the dollar store!

  14. Hi Ruth! I am enjoying what you are doing with this little shadow box! Drora had an interesting observation about the amount of items that even a small project like this one can absorb. It always is a source of amazement to me as well. But don't stop because all those extra details add to the fun of the finished project!

I find there's a balance between making a scene too "busy" and adding enough detail to make it look realistic.

  17. Thanks Kim! A Jar of jam is pretty easy to make. Use Scenic water and mix in some oil paint for color. You just need a label and you're good to go :)
