My Grandpa's Roombox

Today I am so pleased to be able to celebrate my Grandpa's 97th birthday with him in person. My Grandpa is one of my favorite people. Anyone who knows him will tell you that he has incredible integrity, generosity, tells the best stories (he is Irish after all!) and has a way of making you feel loved and appreciated.
I hope the following photos convey the excitement and happiness we both felt this morning.

The room box is designed to fit into an old chess set. My Grandpa and Step-Grandma are looking at me as I deliver a small speech off camera!

Half of the room box is decorated as a carpenter's work room, because wood working has been a lifelong hobby of his. The other half is a library/den since my Grandpa is an avid and enthusiastic reader.

I have have the cutest Grandpa of all time.

  2. Thinking of you too! The day was bittersweet. Grandpa is getting more and more frail and had a bad spell last week. I am so glad my room box cheered him up this morning because there were many times today when he looked so sad. I had to fight back tears a lot of times. But Grandpa's attitude has always been to laugh as much as you can and live as fully as you can. I'm trying my best to embrace that philosophy.

  4. Thanks Jean! My Grandpa has lead an incredible life and it's only been in the last year that he has started to slow down. The room box was very rewarding to make and I will continue to make miniature scenes and cards for friends and family, as they are so touched to receive these personalized gifts.

  6. Aw, thanks sis. It was the best, most rewarding experiencing watching the expression on his face as he opened it. Like a kid on Christmas morning :)
